CIOB Insurance Services has a new and worthwhile benefit of membership to offer. You can now protect yourself from a claim made on a employer for professional work in which you might have been involved. This could be a particularly vulnerable area for members where a previous company no longer exists and a claimant pursues a past professional employee. The celebrated Appeal Court case of Merrett v Babb where a former employee lost everything in retirement illustrates the danger.

The new CIOB Personal Professional Protection Policy delivers significant protection. It provides immediate access to experienced legal assistance in the event of a negligence claim made against you, arising out of your professional activities. In total the policy provides up to £100,000 to cover the cost of legal support and any damages awarded against you, where there is no other policy to protect you. Cover is backdated to the start of your professional career. All your professional activities are covered for a single low monthly premium. Starting at £10 month the premium reduces in retirement to £7.50 per month if taken out more than 5 years before retirement and £5.00 if taken out more than 10 years before retirement.

This innovative new insurance is unique and has been designed exclusively for CIOB members. It’s not a substitute for PII nor is it run off cover. It’s designed for where those are not in place or when they would not provide cover. Whether you are starting out in your career or you’re within sight of retirement or retired, you should consider having this protection.
